Blood, Sweat, and Sensationalism

Do you know what an obstetric fistula is? I sure didn’t before I lived in Niger. It’s not really a term we hear often in North America. This is primarily because most of us have access to pretty great health care, but also probably because most of us don’t give birth before we are in our late twenties.

Nicholas D. Kristof, journalist and co-author of Half the Sky describes the situation of a patient with obstetric fistulas in an article he wrote called New Life for the Pariahs:

This is a childbirth injury, often suffered by a teenager in Africa or Asia whose pelvis is not fully grown. She suffers obstructed labor, has no access to a C-section, and endures internal injuries that leave her incontinent — steadily trickling urine and sometimes feces through her vagina.

She stinks. She becomes a pariah. She is typically abandoned by her husband and forced to live by herself on the edge of her village. She is scorned, bewildered, humiliated and desolate, often feeling cursed by God. Continue reading

Evan and Gordon Talk: About How We’ve Failed You…

Although we did write a post for today, even I, dear readers, thought the quality was too poor for us to publish it. Instead, Evan (who hasn’t been feeling well) and I took it out into the woods and shot it. I’d like to tell you that we gave it a decent burial, but that would be a lie. The coyotes are gonna be eating good tonight.

I know it’s been said before, but how is Sam still fat? Dude’s gotta be burning 5,000 calories a day…

The point is, readers, there will be no E&G Talk this Wednesday (though you should remember to check out Kat’s post). No words can ever describe how ashamed we are of ourselves, which is why the almighty has given us gifs.

We really are sorry.

No Evan and Gordon Talk Today…

…Because you people just won’t suggest topics. And also, because Evan is busy and I am really tired. Leave us some suggestions down in the comment section, people.

Yeah, last night was just not great on a lot of different levels. That being said, if all goes as planned this you should have an extra special edition of E&GT this week. Seriously, my excitement about it verges on washing away the horribleness that was yesterday.

Looking forward to bringing this feature back next week in a big way.

Apologies for the lack of a real post.

-Evan.

Hiatus Extended

So, as you can tell by the title of this post, we are extending our hiatus.

That’s not to say that there will be no posts today- expect one from Gordon and one from myself sometime during this week.

We will be back in full-force on Monday, June 10th, exactly two years after I first purchased [rented?] this domain name. Seems fitting.

I end with a gif of a people-powered Ferris wheel:

No Post This Morning [What Does That Mean?]

Hey guys and girls, I really wish there was a more casual way to refer to members of the female gender that was on par with the term “guys.” I mean, honestly, I’m at the point in my life where I’m 22 and I no longer know whether I’m supposed to tell my friends that I saw a girl or a woman on the streetcar earlier in the day.

Anyway, to get to the point, this week has been a kick to the body as far as the blog goes. I’ve had a lot of work to do, and when I wasn’t doing that I’ve been playing through the Heart of the Swarm campaign. So it’s just been a big ol’ kick to the body.

A kick. To the body.

That being said, I haven’t even looked over the posts for this whole week, which I always do to fix all of the typos in Gordon’s posts and making sure he’s tagged them “Gandhi” and not “ghandi.” I will be doing all of that tomorrow, and I will also be finishing up said StarCraft II campaign.

I may have a post up late tomorrow. No promises.

My productivity has bowed before THE QUEEN OF THE BLADES.

Evan and Gordon Don’t Talk This Week

Actually, we did. I mean, we’re pretty good friends; we more or less get in contact for a couple minutes every day. The strength of our friendship aside, when we did talk the following conversation arose:

This is us talking about maybe blogging last night.

The joy I feel at having people digitally spitting in Gordon’s face notwithstanding[and leaving out his next comments about said people], I too was disappointed to see that our votes for this week looked like this:

Untitled-1

As I said, I thought it was funny. But it is also horrible.

The vote for “Other” was “What the church is doing wrong/right,” and I’m glad someone decided to take the opportunity to suggest a topic to us. Our break this week is largely because of the way the votes turned out, compounded by the fact that Gordon is getting over an illness and I am not used to working a 9 to 5 [yes, I work now].

I will likely be trying to garner suggestions via Facebook in the days between now and next Wednesday, and hopefully that gives us some new material to work with and discuss. As always, feel free to leave a comment, maybe offering a topic we can talk about next week.
