New Years Resolutions i.e. Kat is Back

Well, it’s the new year, so it’s time for resolutions right? Except I have this problem of making new resolutions for myself every time I think I have a good excuse to do so, not just in the new year. You should see the list of stuff I planned to get done over my Christmas break, for example. The only problem is, I’m like most human beings and tend to have a hard time actually completing any of my lists.

Now that school has started I’m already starting to feel like this little guy and my pre-Christmas to-do list is starting to fall by the wayside.

“Why does sitting here make me so tired?”

So, I’m feeling kinda tempted to just do what this girl did on her blog for New Years and talk about the things I am going to stop trying to change about myself instead of making resolutions (I most specifically identify with the part about becoming an early riser). While I really like the reminder to ease up on the self-guilt we all tend to use just to get motivated, I still have one resolution I’d like to share with you guys: I’m going to try to pick up my Wednesday posts again [See addendum below -Ed.].

Okay, so I realize that may not seem like a big resolution, but keep in mind that as an English major I already do my fair share of writing for school. Plus, I really try to put some thought into my posts, so they end up taking a pretty big chunk of time. But, I’m going to do my best to make it through the semester while still blogging twice a week (with maybe a little break over exams).

Heaven help me…

EDITOR’S NOTE: That’s me, Evan; I’m the editor. Kat’s posts will be going up on Saturday, to extend our schedule to six days and so that we don’t have them competing with the CWCs that go up on Wednesday.

2013 In Review

It’s been one long year readers, and I’m not gonna lie, probably the toughest in at least my life so far. In spite of (heck, because of) all the blood, sweat, and strings of profanity, I think we down at Culture War Reporters have really knocked it out of the park.

Let me break it down so that you may properly bask in our glory.

The Shame Day/Fame Day cycle and our midweek discussions were implemented late last year, so we’re only really seeing the full fruits of our labor as 2013 draws to a close. Along with Evan’s reviews of 2 Broke Girls (yes, that still pains me), our relentless salvos of biting-yet-undeniable truth have all helped us pass 100,000 views (and then some).

Our daily viewer average has also grown and is currently hovering at around what our all-time high was last year (that’s roughly 200), and speaking of all-time highs, we have utterly and wholly smashed our previous most-views-record with September 6th’s 3,081 hits. Of course I want us to continue our by-now-normal habit of vanquishing our old records and dragging them behind our chariots, but I’d also like to see us pass 15,000 for total views in a month (our current recording being about 13,000).

I also want to direct your tearful, nay, hysterical applause to Evan, who continues to outdo himself as an editor and Kat, who has really come in swinging.

And of course, audience, what end-of-the-year review would this be if it didn’t include a saccharine bow to you guys for making it all happen? You guys keep coming back, we’ll keep pumping it out. See you in 2014.

I was pretty excited when a childhood friend (Chris, that means you) contacted me this summer to let me know that his cousin was looking for a female writer to contribute to his blog. He thought I might be a good fit and, lucky for me, Evan and Gordon agreed. Joining the guys on CWR has really been a great time. It’s been a good discipline for me to write so regularly, plus it’s fun to get to write about the things that really interest me. Even though I’ve only been at CWR for about 6 months, it’s been exciting to see how our readership has increased even within that time.

Whenever someone asks me what would be the end goal of pursuing a degree in English I usually end up telling them, “pretty much what I’m already doing on the blog right now.” So you should probably go tell all your friends about this blog so that we can all just live the dream and write for a living. Or at least so that we can get their feedback on our posts, because we LOVE hearing back from you.

-Kat

Up above we have Gordon doing some number crunching and Kat sharing what her experience has been like so far, and I’m going to try as hard as I can not to overlap too much with their year-end blurbs.

2013 has definitely been a year of expansion for CWR. We wrote roughly twice as many posts this year and brought on a new writer. That’s all well and good, but in the immortal words of Tony Stark to Steve Rogers in Issue #1 of Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers when discussing their titular group:

We have to get bigger

But not just bigger, like the expansion of their roster to 18 heroes, but also better, like adding Shang-Chi, Master of Kung-Fu, to the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. My dream is for Culture War Reporters to one day be a place where you can consistently drop in to read what others think about today’s culture, from comic books (of course) to race issues to television to music, but in such a way that it forces you to think about it as well.

We’ve got a long ways to go, that’s clear, but just know that we’re always aiming to improve ourselves and the site as a whole. This is our third year on the internet, and as far as I’m concerned our fourth can only be better. Huge thanks to all our readers who’ve helped us get where we are today.

And yes, I’m going to finally be getting to writing those posts I promised.

Below we have something about some sort of WordPress.com stats helper monkeys preparing a 2013 annual report for this blog:

Internet Problems

I’m in a library typing this because my house hasn’t had any internet since roughly 2 PM Thursday, which explains the lack of a post yesterday. I leave for a cabin in Muskoka in a few hours at which there will be internet, or at least I’ve been promised.

I haven’t missed an update in a few months now, and this is pretty devastating to me. Mourn with me over the loss of my streak, and then congratulate me on my return. The gif below will instruct you as to how:

ALSO: Our blog is now also on tumblr, which I suppose means our blog now has our blog. This is mostly to post a lot of our existing content to another corner of the internet, but I’ll be reblogging posts I’m into as well.

Ch-ch-changes…

Yes, this is essentially my fourth, if you count today’s Writers’ Roundtable, post for the week, and I still have two more to go. That’s a lot of writing, folks.

We have a few changes taking place hereabouts, with the first at the recommendation of power-reader Orion. You may know who he is, because he leaves comments on a good number of posts, and that makes him super great.

Evan and Gordon Talk has been changed to Culture War Correspondence due to the fact that it’s not just Gordon and yours truly jabbering on at each other anymore. When it’s all three of us a CWR Writers’ Roundtable will take place, a name I chose in part because its initials are the same as this blog.

Another change under features is that addition of Culture War Reports, which Gordon started with his respective posts on attending a midget wrestling match and a musical. This feature will focus on the experience of attending events, which separates it from Reviews [which admittedly is just 2 Broke Girls at the moment, though I’ve been meaning to throw up a book review soon].

And that is all. Thank you for reading and keeping up to date with the goings-on around here. If you were not hungry you will be now, because here is a gif of pizza to conclude this update:

CWR Monday News

No, this doesn’t have anything to do with actual news, but it does relate to what is happening on this blog this Monday. Oh, happy Canadian Thanksgiving, people who celebrate it!

I apologize on Gordon’s behalf for the late post today. There was one up this morning, but we’ve since taken that down, and all in all he’s admitted that this is entirely his fault. It’s a surprise to me, too.

Later today Gordon will be concluding what he is calling a series on Western Christianity [which really started, I suppose, in mid-September] with a post on biblical inerrancy. There will also be a following wrap-up post which gathers the many thoughts he’s presented about the way we view religion in North America. Some of them have been pretty controversial, to say the least, so I’m looking forward to how he chooses to conclude the topic [for now].

On the right is a gif of the devilishly handsome James Franco, playing Harry Osborne in the very poorly received Spider-Man 3. That movie aside, it’s going to be hard to see how Dane Dehaan’s performance is going to compare in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2. He is the apex predator, though. He’s definitely got that going for him.

[Probably] No E&GT Tomorrow

First of all, if you’re reading this on the front page, I hope you notice that all of the posts below this one have been shortened and now end with a “Continue Reading” link. It’s our my hope that this will make the homepage a little easier to navigate, as well as searching through our backlogs.

I’m currently writing this from the library, as the renovations in the basement caused a wire to be cut and then spliced back together. What I mean to say is that when I left the house there was no internet, and there may not be when I return.

That being said, this post is to announce the new layout [so far 1/4 of all the posts are formatted this way] and to state that if I don’t get my internet problems fixed by tonight there will be no E&GT.

My post on Friday will go up even if it means returning to the library  to write and post it.

Thanks as always for tuning in. Here’s a gif of a prank from what I assume is some goofy Japanese TV show:
