Fame Day: Maysoon Zayid, Integrated Schools, and Bringing Special Needs into the Spotlight

Have you seen this TED talk by Maysoon Zayid? At around 11:50 in her stand-up routine she says something pretty profound that hadn’t really occurred to me before, despite having people with special needs in my life since I was a little girl:

“People with disabilities are the largest minority population in the world, and we are the most under-represented in entertainment.”

She makes a good point. Can you think of a movie about or including a person with special needs? How about a movie about/including a person with special needs where that person is played by someone with special needs? It’s a lot harder, isn’t it?

Try to think of something other than The Ringer, since I gave that one away.

Moving on up… (i.e. No Post Today)

I beg your forgiveness yet again. I’ve fallen behind in my posts because John and I decided to try to race home in time for Easter. We’ve spent the better part of today getting ready to move up North for the summer. Alas, student life involves living light and moving often… at least if you hope to make any money over the summer.

I wish my house was like Howl’s.

I promise I will be back on top of my regular posts by next week. Have a fantastic long weekend!

Shame Day: Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Writers Who Kill Everyone

So, I watch Game of Thrones.

I watch it for the awesome female characters, although a little begrudgingly. I mean, do they have to put boobs in my face EVERY SINGLE EPISODE? It’s like the writers are sitting around and realize “Hey guys, we don’t have any of the main characters’ boobs in this episode! What are we going to do?” and then the guy in the back of the room is like “Why don’t we set another scene in a brothel!” and everyone goes “Oh yeah, great idea.” Seriously, I challenge you find me two episodes in a row without boobs. The Human Barbie, Hairy Armpits, and Beauty Modifications

We’ve touched on beauty quite a few times here on CWR. We’ve celebrated when France banned beauty pageants for kids, dedicated a round table to discussing the idea of beauty and its changing standards, and, in The (Inner) Beauty Problem, even asked why we try to attribute beauty to everyone rather than giving more weight to other attributes.

So why does “beauty” as a topic come up so often? Well, probably because it’s a question that gets thrown at us every day through advertising. I for one, get this ad popping up on my Facebook every few days.

5 Lessons from the HIMYM finale

So, How I Met Your Mother is finally over. And the internet is pissed.

Spoilers below, obviously.

This is what everyone wishes they could do to the writers.
