Shame Day: The Abortion Debate

I’ve seen both sides of this debate.

I grew up in a devotedly pro-life home. I was taught pro-life apologetics and arguments (largely from books by Peter Kreeft [go read The Unaborted Socrates]). In spite of that, my study of the development of life and my debates with pro-choicers led me eventually to cross the line. I concluded that if personhood ends with the cessation of brain activity, surely it must begin with it as well.

All that’s to say I’ve had first hand experience with both sides of the highly contentious issue.

But I’m not here to talk about abortion. I’m hear to shine the spotlight on the supreme nitwits who scream the loudest from both sides of the argument. Let’s break it down here. Continue reading →

While this week we’re trying to take a break from politics here at Culture War Reporters (last week was dominated by the subject), I really wouldn’t be doing my due dilligence if I didn’t give a shout out the protestors currently flooding the streets of Rio De Janeiro, down in Brazil. The Brazilian government has proposed tripling the cost of public transportation, and while that might sound to many like a pretty paltry thing, to the poor and urban working class of Brazil who rely on public transit, that kind of increase is going to be devastating. Brazilian protestors- keep up the good work.

Fame Day: Edward Snowden

As you probably well know, I’m the last person on this blog to write about politics. Gordon has that well under control, if the first two posts of this week are any indication. On that note, I feel that I fall into the category of “politically ignorant” in quite a few ways. I’ve never voted, for one.

There are a few reasons for that, of course, such as my living overseas and then being a Canadian attending college in the States, but the fact of the matter is that I know very little about even my own government. Heck, I can tell you more about the state of the politics at DC Comics right now more than the Harper administration.

In a lot of ways, simply being friends with Gordon keeps me up to date. Well, that and the snippets of news I hear when my granddad is watching TV and I’m on my laptop. I knew about this Snowden guy, and that he’d leaked some classified info, but Gordon told me something that I didn’t know:

Shame Day: Political Ignorance

Do you know what the origin of the word “idiot” is?

It comes from the ancient Greek for someone who is totally self-centered; someone without any interest in public affairs. To the inventors of democracy, “idiocy” was the opposite of “citizenship.”

Readers, we are surrounded by idiots.

When I was putting together yesterday’s post, the pictures I used inevitably had a host of comments sighing “It’s Washington, what do you expect?”, “Politicians have always been dirtbags,” and “This is why I don’t vote.”

The issues change, but the reactions remain the same. People throw up their hands and start spewing folksy, thought-cancelling truisms about how politics is inherently corrupt, or how it’s always been this way and always will be, or how it doesn’t matter who you vote for. Continue reading →

Impeach the President

Yeah, impeach the president.

That’s not some pun or a reference to some obscure corner of modern culture. I’m not writing a post about impeachments or presidents in general. I am asking you to sign petitions demanding the impeachment of Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States.

Technically, he’s 46th, because a couple presidents didn’t want to be sworn-in on a Sunday, the secretary of state was made “president-for-a day.”

No, I am not a conservative. I’m not some tea-party “patriot” who thinks the president is the reincarnation of Hitler. I don’t think the president wants to institute Marxism (unlike yours truly). This is not going to be some rant using out-of-context phrases to forewarn you about some unholy alliance of immigrants, Muslims, and gays. This is my appeal to- to all of you- to demand more from your leaders. Continue reading →

Let’s start with General Efrain Rios Montt, former Guatemalan dictator. Montt has just managed to get his April 19th conviction overturned by a constitutional court.
