2 Broke Girls, S3E4 “And the Group Head”: A TV Review

grouphead

This week’s episode offers up something a little new, and that takes the form of Luis [pictured above], the replacement for the day waiter we never got to meet. Portrayed by Federico Dordei he is flamboyantly gay, a waiting “lifer” of 27 years who doesn’t get attached, and someone I found to be painfully funny.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of crude stereotypes, but Luis was particularly endearing to me because of the raw energy the character had, some of which he directed into asserting his refusal to be a part of the girls’ drama. He also made the observation that “Max is funny, look at her. Aww, funny to mask the pain,” and this really made me think about all the references she’s constantly making to her horrific childhood and life up to this point.

2 Broke Girls, S3E3 “And the Kitty Kitty Spank Spank”: A TV Review

kittyspank

Last week I mentioned how what originally drew me to 2 Broke Girls was its premise, that of two girls down on their luck, doing anything they can to get by. This week I’m faced with the fact that they’ve pretty much thrown it out the window, and that I just may be okay with that.

This isn’t a show that is ever going to be laugh-out-loud funny, at least to me, but this episode made me grin a number of times, and didn’t even mention money once. You don’t have to search much further for criticism about a show “forgetting its purpose” than one hour earlier on CBS. How I Met Your Mother has a very distinct goal, and one they’re finally getting around to in the ninth and final season, and while we complained about how long they were taking we also got more than a few hilarious episodes out of the seasons leading up to what will be the finale. When a premise has been so clearly stated [in the title, no less], can we forgive a show for setting it aside to make us laugh? Continue reading

2 Broke Girls, S3E2 “And the Kickstarter”: A TV Review

kickstarterrrr

I’m of the personal opinion that the best episodes of 2 Broke Girls have always been the ones that focus around the protagonists trying to make money by any means necessary. While I’m fairly positive I’ve shared this before, at the time it came out the show was the closest thing we had to a 99 percent movement sitcom, and that really set it apart; I say “was” because, as Mightygodking points out, other shows are beginning to discuss class as well.

That being said, two of my personal favourites are “And the Drug Money” and “And the Egg Special”, which concerned Max and Caroline doing medical trials and attempting to sell their eggs, respectively. I’ve had times when I was so hard up for work that I considered letting people test drugs on me for two days so that I could make a cool $500. Selling blood, too. It’s a reality, folks. 2 Broke Girls, S3E1 “And the Soft Opening”: A TV Review

Ladies and gentlemen, a little under half a year has passed and here we are again, with the first episode of 2 Broke Girls Season 3. For this season I am committed to bringing better reviews and not just play-by-plays of each and every scene. After all, this is the first full season of a show I’ll be reviewing [I took over after The AV Club’s TV Club dropped it from their list], and I’d like to improve as much as I can.

When last we saw the girls they had just discovered a back room area of the diner in which they will be breathing new life into the dead dream that was their cupcake business. As for the rest of the gang, both Oleg and Sophie are “back”; I recapped the whole thing pretty thoroughly back in May]. Continue reading

2 Broke Girls, S2E24 “And the Window of Opportunity”: A TV Review

lastepisodelastepisode

I don’t think I can put into words how excited I was for this episode. Not only does my opinion about starting this all again this fall hinge on how this turns out, it also means a months-long hiatus from doing weekly TV reviews. On many nights, like tonight, I’ve had to double up on 2BG reviews and Shame Days, and it has not been fun.

Forewarning, a ridiculous amount happens in this episode, so much that my order of events probably gets really, really messed up. Please bear with me. Continue reading

2 Broke Girls, S2E23 “And the Tip Slip”: A TV Review

tipslip

Let me begin by saying that this week’s cold open was a wonderful representation of the show as a well-run ensemble comedy. Max and Caroline are ragging on Has as usual, yes, but he retorts, and Oleg and Earl are not far behind with their own comments. It’s light, snappy, and most importantly funny. Considering that I’m more than likely going to be reviewing this into the next year, this is the show I want to be watching every Monday night. Continue reading
