An Asian Man’s Reaction to AMWW Magazine

amwwmag

I want to write an entire separate post about this logo, which goes against everything I learned in Graphic Design.

To start with, AMWW Magazine is a website, not an actual print publication. The letters in its title stand for “Asian Man White Woman” which makes it sound like it’s a place to find niche pornography; I assure you that it is not. Under its About section the writers describe the work they do as:

“…a resource for both men and women in order to learn how to connect and hopefully meet their romantic, cross-cultural partner. Whether it’s for a brief, passionate and illicit one time liaison to a lifelong romance that smolders well into the twilight of your life, our interracial dating advice blog aims to give both men and women practical and solid information from both sides of the gender lines on how to improve your dating, sex, and love life.”

Now I found AMWW while being linked from race site to race site, probably starting with the racebending tumblr, but when I found it I wasn’t quite sure how to react. After showing it around to friends online and reading through a good number of the articles myself, I arrived at the very vague conclusion that it made me uncomfortable.

Writing this post is a way for me to explore that feeling. Continue reading

Things Didn’t Work Out As I’d Liked

Due to some last-minute freelance writing and a doctor’s appointment I had to take my granddad to today’s post will be going up late. Here’s a bit of filler in the meantime, a TV promos piece I did for The Magazine website:

What’s On TV: January 2014

Oh, and here’s what I stayed up working on, two recaps for the ceaselessly entertaining Total Drama All-Stars for the same site:

TOTAL DRAMA ALL-STARS: “Heroes vs. Villains” Recap

TOTAL DRAMA ALL-STARS: “Evil Dread” Recap

Doctor Who, Christmas Special “The Time of the Doctor” : A TV Review

timeofthedoctor
I shouldn’t have been surprised. Any episode following the fantastically executed 50th Anniversary Special was bound to be sub-par. If I was to sum up the Christmas Special in a few words it would be this: “too much plot in too little time.”

The episode starts with promise. First, we are introduced to “the message” a signal that has been sent out across the universe, gathering everyone, especially the Eleventh Doctor’s most well known enemies, to one specific planet. Then, because the Christmas special always has to involve Christmas, the Doctor gets a call from Clara asking him to pretend to be her boyfriend for turkey dinner with her family. Continue reading

Fame Day: Cop Watch

Readers, as I was in the middle of researching my originally intended Fame Day I was interrupted by the sound of pounding outside my door. It was the cops, interrogating my next door neighbor about the last time he saw someone. I stood by the door, listening- though the primary cop speaking was yelling so loudly I really didn’t have to. Of course, it just made me extra sure I got his exact words:

“I hate this fucking complex.”

“I will give you shit until you give me what I want.”

Other, similar statements followed- though I try to observe Evan’s general rule of keeping profanity to a minimum. The neighbor repeatedly said that he hadn’t seen they guy they were after, which only resulted in both more shouting from the cop and, from the sound of it, him stomping into the apartment. Without a warrant or the consent of the my neighbor, which constitutes a violation of his 4th amendment rights.

Culture War Correspondence: Atheist Churches

GORDON: Brothers and sisters, we are gathered together today in the eyes of…

well, nothing. Today’s discussion will cover the growing number of atheist churches in the West.

EVAN: That may seem like a ludicrous concept to any and all of you, so I think before the two of us really begin discussing this movement that originated in the UK [of course] I think it would be good for us to share what our first impressions were of that term.

So, Gordon, what did you imagine an atheist church was, or would be like?

GORDON: Well, my immediate reaction to the concept was that it’d all be some kind of satire, like Pastafarianism, though the more I thought about how one would actually function, the more I kept returning to some kind of a cross between a support group and a study group.

New Years Resolutions i.e. Kat is Back

Well, it’s the new year, so it’s time for resolutions right? Except I have this problem of making new resolutions for myself every time I think I have a good excuse to do so, not just in the new year. You should see the list of stuff I planned to get done over my Christmas break, for example. The only problem is, I’m like most human beings and tend to have a hard time actually completing any of my lists.

Now that school has started I’m already starting to feel like this little guy and my pre-Christmas to-do list is starting to fall by the wayside.

“Why does sitting here make me so tired?”

So, I’m feeling kinda tempted to just do what this girl did on her blog for New Years and talk about the things I am going to stop trying to change about myself instead of making resolutions (I most specifically identify with the part about becoming an early riser). While I really like the reminder to ease up on the self-guilt we all tend to use just to get motivated, I still have one resolution I’d like to share with you guys: I’m going to try to pick up my Wednesday posts again [See addendum below -Ed.].

Okay, so I realize that may not seem like a big resolution, but keep in mind that as an English major I already do my fair share of writing for school. Plus, I really try to put some thought into my posts, so they end up taking a pretty big chunk of time. But, I’m going to do my best to make it through the semester while still blogging twice a week (with maybe a little break over exams).

Heaven help me…

EDITOR’S NOTE: That’s me, Evan; I’m the editor. Kat’s posts will be going up on Saturday, to extend our schedule to six days and so that we don’t have them competing with the CWCs that go up on Wednesday.
