I then proceeded to read pretty well the whole book over the next few days. Some of my favorite stories focus on her childhood shenanigans, including the time she ate an entire cake,

I’m not a dad. I probably won’t be a dad for a good number of years, seeing as the last “serious” relationship I was in was the latter end of high school. Even still, I find myself thinking about how I’m going to raise people who are 50% me, and one particular area is in imparting my personal beliefs.
Yes, I’m a Christian, and yes, I do believe that Christ is the son of God sent to die for our sins and that scripture is inerrant and so on and so forth, but regardless of how true all of that is for me I still struggle with how I ought to impart, at bare minimum, the knowledge of those beliefs to the kids I don’t have yet. It’s actually pretty hard to write a Fame Day post for Christmas since it’s now pretty much synonymous with materialism, something that most people agree “eats you from the inside out.”
But dang it guys! I really love Christmas! I love all the lights everywhere draining energy and creating light pollution. I love the repetitive Christmas music on the radio. I love giving and (gasp) even receiving gifts (though I try to only purchase gifts from businesses I feel happy supporting ex. fair trade, local, etc). So much about how Christmas is marketed goes against the things I want to be socially conscious about, and yet I can’t seem to help loving it. I think this probably comes down to the many fun traditions my family has had, and the way the season forces us all to drop everything going on in our lives just to spend time together.
So I’ve decided that for today’s Fame Day post I’m going to share a few of my favorite traditions, and I would really love if you could tell me a little bit about yours. Continue reading

EVAN: Dearest audience, this week we dedicate our blog posts [more or less] to the holidays, and today’s Writers’ Roundtable is especially festive with not one, but two Christmas-related topics. Seeing as this is the season of giving the first one, website/movement No Red Kettles, is particularly appropriate.
KAT: Well, I first learned about the debate around the Salvation Army on my Facebook feed where it was causing a pretty big debate.
The first article I read about it insisted that the Salvation Army “hates gays”, which I immediately thought was pretty fishy. The Sally Ann did release an official response, but the debate has continued, because for many people it has clicked that the Salvation Army is a Christian organization, and they aren’t so sure they want to support it because of that.
This video from No Red Kettles pretty well sums up that argument:

Not of the blog, of the year. Or posts for the year, to be more specific. I just got back from two days camping to see that the world had not ended, which was marvelous news. Life, and the internet, as we knows it moves on, and so does Culture War Reporters.
As I am currently in Thailand for the holidays, and both Gordon and I are sorely in need of a break, this will be the last post of 2012. A lot has happened, but I’m going to leave that up to my co-writer, as he’s responsible for a lot of them. As I said in the last post, thanks for reading, and here’s to an even better year.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls (who really shouldn’t have any reason to read this post), welcome to Culture War Reporters’ year in review.
Thanks to your fanatical devotion, we here at CWR have completely and utterlysmashed our previous goal of a daily viewer average of 150, and currently have a total number of views exceeding 51,000.
While this is doubtlessly a result of our combined awesomeness, I’d like to also imagine that our host of new installments has something to do with it- this past Fall having seen the advent of “Fame Days”, “Shame Days”, and “Evan and Gordon Talk”– all of which have been resounding successes.
Frankly, I feel we deserve a round of applause.
On top of that, we’ll be taking a well deserved break here at CWR- but don’t worry, we’ll be back the second week of January.
